The length you care about is only 5 miles from 59th to the Ferries. Just avoid the M12, M8, M49 buses, they are infrequent (12) or very, very slow (8, 49).
What about Greenwich Village? Soho? the Upper West Side? Harlem? The Lower East Side? The East Village? the Financial District (like what made it famous in the first place)? Have you by any chance looked at a Manhattan bus map? It's not bad: Just take them to the numbered street you need. The whole famous stuff is only 1.5 miles in width, and there are only 5 northbound avenues for buses and 5 southbound avenues for buses. Just get to each area using preferably the subway or a north or southbound bus (they go faster) and getting off at each location. (We could see it from my elementary school in Southern Brooklyn). The Empire State Building is visible from miles away, but hard to see when you riding by at 10 mph and 30 feet away from it. Of course those 10 seconds won't give you much of a a view of anything. You can see the edge of Rockefeller Center on a 5th Avenue bus (which is one going southbound, it goes northbound on Madison). Actually standing in front of it will require about 7 minutes to see it from every angle :^) Chinatown is best experience on foot Grand Cnetral just looks like a building until you go inside. Riding by the Flatiron Bldg, for example, takes 10 seconds. Just go to each place by bus or subway or walk. Just go to each place riding in a city bus that will stop in traffic at someplace you don't care about and zip by some place that you do care about is not worth it.
